AIPG Luncheon Speaker - 10 January 2012 - Steve Lee - MPCA

Abstract:  Environmental expectations and the origins of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in 1967

In the late 1970’s Steve Lee got interested in history while digging up chemical barrels near the site of St. Paul’s first murder. He later was intrigued by a picture of Minnesota’s Governor on hands and knees scrubbing oiled ducks. Because of that experience he researched and wrote a Minnesota History Magazine article on the big spills of 1963: “Operation Save a Duck”. Back when there were new hires at MPCA, Steve was asked to encourage those new MPCA employees about how the environment really is getting better, despite what the paper says. Or at least to tell stories about how when old problems are resolved, they are replaced by new and harder problems that require brighter employees. Those are the stories Steve will ramble on about at the January 10th meeting.

Bio:
Mr. Lee has been with MPCA for 34 years. He was present at the beginnings of the Superfund and LUST programs, and for the past 25 years has supervised or managed the MPCA emergency response team and now the Brownfield redevelopment program.
