Allianz Field Soccer Stadium: Addressing Subsurface Contamination by Innovative Design & Construction!

by Kenneth Larsen, PE, PG and Jeff Shopek, PE, FNSPE

Presentation Abstract

Allianz Field was constructed on a historic streetcar facility with significant soil and groundwater contamination. Braun Intertec and Loucks collaborated with multiple other project stakeholders to design innovative environmental, geotechnical and civil engineering solutions by prioritizing constructability, cost savings and sustainability. The presentation will summarize how the challenging site geology and related contamination affected the proposed project and will describe some of the innovative design solutions that were developed for the project.  Examples include an innovative “barrier wall” approach that utilizes the stadium wall, a protective membrane and natural clay soils to impede contamination, and a comprehensive shared, stacked green infrastructure (SSGI) stormwater system conserves 2.8M gallons of water annually, achieving redevelopment goals for density and sustainability that will benefit the entire 35-acre “SuperBlock” site surrounding the stadium.
