Opening the “Can of Worms” – The Twin Ports Interchange Construction Project, Duluth, MN

by Keri Aufdencamp, CPESC of Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH) and Pete Marthaler, PE (MN) of the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT)

Presentation Overview

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 “𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬,” 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?

Pete Marthaler and Keri Aufdencamp will walk us through the highlights of the first ~2.5 years of construction on the 5-year Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Twin Ports Interchange (TPI) Project located in Duluth, Minnesota. Challenges encountered on the project range from a 3+ acre asbestos abatement, contaminated groundwater, contaminated and hazardous levels of soil, trout streams, wetlands, 20 bridge demolitions, encountering an old trestle bridge, a snowy owl, bones, a headstone, and the potential to find body bags. What more could you ask of a can of worms?

We’ll hear about the complexities of this large-scale interchange construction project, an overview of Best Management Practices, and managing other environmental risks during construction.
