Per the Minnesota Board of AELSLAGID website Frequently Asked Questions FAQs | Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (mn.gov), “As with all other continuing education activities, it is up to licensees/certificate holders to use their judgment to determine whether a particular course or activity meets the statutory requirements for continuing education.” In a prior email announcement for the Tuesday, April 2, 2024, ethics training event, AIPG MN mentioned that priority be given to licensed professionals to register for the training to meet their biennial ethics educational requirement for professional licensure in Minnesota; this statement has since been removed and was not intended to guarantee that the training will meet the statutory requirements. Instead, the statement was intended to convey that available registrant capacity for the training is limited. As always, please exercise individual professional judgement regarding interpretation of statutory requirements for professional licensure in Minnesota.
Fees go toward supporting the online meeting platform and the Education Fund. Your contribution to the Education Fund helps support many activities, please see our Giving Back page.
AIPG Ethics Discussion Forum: Ethics, Diversity, and Unconscious Bias
by Sara Pearson, CPG, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and Jessica Davey M.S., Davey Consulting Corp
Presentation Overview
An interactive discussion on ethics from a geoscience perspective, including discussion on how professional ethics interact with diversity and inclusion, and unconscious bias. The general format is outlined below.
- Definition of ethics, including the intent of the AIPG Code of Ethics. As part of the small group discussion (using breakout rooms), attendees should consider the following: Ethics are based on a moral sense of right and wrong that do not always have a bright line to distinguish what may be ethical. Have you encountered a situation that may fall into a gray area?
- A review of the AIPG Code of Ethics (https://aipg.org/page/Ethics).
- A discussion about diversity and inclusion and the intersection with professional ethics.
- As part of the small group discussion (using breakout rooms), attendees should consider the following: What does diversity and inclusion mean to you?
- Unconscious bias discussion and the intersection with professional ethics. As part of the small group discussion (using breakout rooms), attendees should take at least two of the Harvard Implicit Bias Tests before the talk (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html) and note their results for the discussion.
- A discussion of additional resources.
