Geoethics: Understanding Ethics in the Geosciences

Presented by Eryn Bloom, St. Cloud State University

Presentation Overview

Geoethics explores the ethical, social, and cultural implications of Earth Science practices, advocating for responsible stewardship of the planet. This presentation delves into the core principles of Geoethics, including sustainability, inclusivity, and transparency, and examines how these principles can be applied to real-world scenarios in geoscience. By analyzing case studies and decision-making frameworks, we will explore how geoscientists can navigate complex ethical dilemmas, balance human development with environmental preservation, and promote just and equitable interactions with the Earth.

Biography

Eryn Bloom, is a fourth-year Honors undergraduate student at St. Cloud State University, double majoring in Hydrology and Earth Sciences. Growing up among the rivers of the Midwest, Eryn developed a deep appreciation for water ecosystems and their critical role in regional environmental health. As an active leader in her community, she serves as a Geology Teaching Assistant and President of the Hydro-Geo Club, where she promotes a collaborative environment for students passionate about Earth Sciences and the environment. Through her research in Geoethics, Eryn is dedicated to exploring the ethical implications of geoscience practices and applying these principles to real-world environmental challenges. With aspirations to specialize in wetlands and floodplain science, she aims to integrate ecology and physical sciences to develop innovative strategies for environmental conservation and flood mitigation. In 2024, Eryn received the Association of State Floodplain Managers Foundation Future Leader Scholarship for her personal and academic dedication in studying and working in the floodplain sciences.
