Protecting Our Pristine Waters: Understanding Threats to Minnesota's Freshwater

Presented by Amelia Wilson-Jackson, Graduate Student, University of Minnesota, Earth and Environmental Sciences Department (previously at St. Croix Watershed Research Station)

Presentation Overview

Pristine clean water is central to our identity as Minnesotans. This presentation will address the threats to water quality across the state focusing on three key issues: harmful algal blooms in the Superior National Forest, the new aquatic invader Didymosphenia geminata in North Shore streams, and the impact of road salt on freshwater ecosystems. This presentation is a culmination of much of the work that Amelia completed at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station.

Biography

Amelia Wilson-Jacksonis a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, where she studies the biogeochemistry of carbon, iron, and sulfur cycles in glacial meltwaters. Previously, she worked at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, where she analyzed water samples for nutrients and algal toxins and conducted radiometric dating and chemical analysis of sediment cores.
